Video gets all the attention.
Every conference talk is about UGC, Reels and the first three seconds. Meanwhile, in plenty of accounts, a single image with a sharp line of text is quietly doing a lot of the selling.
Static ads aren't the old way. They're the fast way.
The short version
A static ad is a single image with no motion: a photo, a graphic, or text on a background.
They work because they're fast and cheap to make, which means you can test far more ideas than you could with video. And a good static is read in a glance.
More ideas tested = more chances to find a winner
On Meta, statics usually run as single image ads in feed, Stories and Reels, alongside video in the same campaign.
Static vs video vs dynamic ads
Static ads are one fixed image. Everyone sees the same thing.
Video ads move. They can tell a story and show the product in use, but they take longer to make and need a hook in the first seconds.
Dynamic ads change for each viewer. On Meta, catalog ads pull products from your feed and show each person the ones they're most likely to want.
You don't pick one. Most accounts that do well run all three, and statics are often where new angles get tested first.
Why statics still win
1. Speed. A static can go from idea to live in hours. That turns testing from an event into a habit.
2. Cost. Cheap ads are easier to kill. When an asset took two days to make, people protect it long after the data says to stop.
3. Clarity. A static has to make its point in one look. That discipline often produces a sharper message than a 30-second video.
4. A clean read on the idea. With no motion or voiceover to carry it, a static tells you whether the angle itself works.
That's why I lean on statics for concept testing. When an angle wins as a static, it usually deserves a video version too.
The static formats that keep winning
The same handful of formats show up again and again in the winners I ship.
- Borrowed formats. Ads dressed as things people already trust: a news headline layout, a text message screenshot, a review card. The brain reads the format before it registers the ad.
- Comparison. Old way vs new way, us vs them. A choice is easier than a decision.
- The specific number. A concrete stat or price beats an adjective every time.
- Customer proof. A real review, quoted big, with the product beside it.
- The pattern interrupt. Something that breaks the polish of the feed. Ugly on purpose beats pretty and invisible.
- The offer. Price, bundle or guarantee, front and center. Best for people who already know you.
The reasoning behind each of these is in what hundreds of ad creatives taught me about hooks.
Sizes and safe zones
The common guidance for Meta:
- Feed: 4:5 (1080 × 1350) or 1:1 (1080 × 1080). 4:5 fills more of a phone screen.
- Stories and Reels: 9:16 (1080 × 1920). Keep text and the product away from the top and bottom edges, where profile icons and buttons sit.
- Files: JPG or PNG, at least 1080 pixels on the shortest side.
Meta crops images that don't fit a placement, so make the versions yourself rather than let it guess. Check Meta's Ads Guide before a big production run, because the specs change.
How to judge a static
Statics have no video plays, so hook rate doesn't apply.
Click-through rate is your first read. It tells you whether the image and the line on it earned attention and a click.
Then cost per result, once the ad has spent enough to trust the number. My kill rules say how much that is, and creative testing on Meta covers the whole process.
Making statics at volume
The real advantage of statics only shows up when you make a lot of them. That's where AI helps: generating scenes, backgrounds and variations fast, with a human doing every decision and the final pass.
I walk through my process in how I produce 15+ statics a month per account with AI. The rule I never break: the product in the ad is always the real product.
Pool rule 003Be prolific. Volume finds winners.
Quick answers
What are static ads? Single-image ads with no motion. A photo, a graphic, or text on a background.
Are static ads better than video ads? Neither is better everywhere. Statics are faster to make and test. Video can show more. Strong accounts run both.
What's the difference between static and dynamic ads? A static shows everyone the same image. A dynamic ad changes for each viewer, usually by pulling products from a catalog.
What size should a static Facebook ad be? 4:5 (1080 × 1350) or 1:1 for feed, and 9:16 (1080 × 1920) for Stories and Reels.
How do I measure a static ad? Click-through rate first, then cost per result once there's enough spend behind it.
The one-line version
Statics aren't the cheap option. They're the fast one, and speed is how you find winners.
