When ROAS drops, most people reach for the same three buttons.
Cut the budget. Narrow the audience. Change the bid.
Sometimes that helps for a week. Usually it just makes the account smaller. ROAS is the output of a few inputs, and you can only fix it for good by fixing them.
The short version
ROAS goes up when you pay less to reach people, more of them click, more of those buy, or each buyer spends more.
ROAS = (CTR × conversion rate × AOV × 1,000) ÷ CPM
That's the whole thing. Every tactic that raises ROAS moves one of those five numbers: CPM, click-through rate, conversion rate, average order value, or what gets counted as revenue.
The ROAS equation, worked through
Take an account with a $15 CPM, a 1.5% click-through rate, a 3% conversion rate and a $70 average order value.
(0.015 × 0.03 × 70 × 1,000) ÷ 15 = 2.1
A 2.1x ROAS. Now change one input at a time:
- Raise average order value to $85: ROAS becomes 2.55.
- Raise conversion rate to 3.6%: ROAS becomes 2.52.
- Raise click-through rate to 1.8%: ROAS becomes 2.52.
- Drop CPM to $12: ROAS becomes 2.63.
None of those is a giant jump on its own. Together they move ROAS from 2.1 to over 4.
There is no single trick. There are five levers, and they multiply.
I call this the ROAS equation, and it's the first thing I write down when an account's ROAS is sliding. It tells you where to look.
Lever 1: Click-through rate (the creative)
On Meta, creative does most of the work. It decides who sees the ad, whether they stop, and whether they click.
- Test new hooks on your best concepts. Same body, new first moment. Judge on hook rate and click-through rate.
- Add new concepts every week. Different angles reach different people. More in creative testing on Meta.
- Replace tired ads before they die. Rising frequency and falling click-through rate are ad fatigue.
Lever 2: Conversion rate (the page)
Half the ROAS problems I see aren't ad problems. The ad works and the page loses the sale.
- Match the page to the ad. If the ad promises a specific benefit, the page should open with it.
- Make the page fast on a phone. Most Meta traffic is mobile.
- Put proof near the buy button: reviews, guarantees, delivery times.
Lever 3: Average order value (the offer)
This is the lever most buyers forget, because it isn't in Ads Manager.
- Bundles and multi-packs. Make the bigger order the obvious choice.
- Free-shipping thresholds set just above your typical order.
- Post-purchase offers that add to the order after the decision is made.
A higher order value also lowers your break-even ROAS, so it helps twice. The break-even ROAS calculator shows how much.
Lever 4: CPM (the auction)
You can't control the auction, but you can stop fighting it.
- Go broad. Narrow audiences are crowded and expensive. Let the creative find the people.
- Let Meta use all placements unless one is clearly losing.
- Make ads people engage with. Meta prices in how relevant an ad is, so stronger creative tends to buy cheaper reach.
Lever 5: What gets counted
If Meta can't see a sale, it can't count it, and it can't find more buyers like that one.
- Set up the Conversions API so purchases the Pixel misses still reach Meta. I explain it in the Meta Conversions API, explained.
- Check purchase values are right, including discounts and currency.
- Check the total against real revenue with MER. Better tracking should raise reported ROAS without your bank balance disagreeing.
What not to do
Don't chase ROAS by shrinking. Cutting to retargeting only, or slashing the budget, almost always raises ROAS. It also cuts the number of new customers. You can't bank a ratio.
Don't kill everything on a bad day. Judge ads on enough spend. My kill rules say how much.
Don't change five things at once. Fix one lever, read the result, then the next.
And remember the goal isn't the highest possible ROAS. It's the most profit, which often means a slightly lower ROAS on a bigger budget. I go through the math in what is a good ROAS.
Pool rule 002Creative is the targeting.
Quick answers
What is the fastest way to increase ROAS on Meta? Cut ads that have spent 2 to 3x your target CPA with nothing to show, and move that money to your best performers. Then fix creative and the landing page.
Does increasing the budget lower ROAS? Usually a little. Extra spend reaches people who are less ready to buy. That's fine as long as total profit goes up.
Does retargeting increase ROAS? It shows a higher ROAS because those people were already close to buying. Don't compare it with prospecting, and don't let it replace prospecting.
How do I calculate my current ROAS? Revenue from ads divided by ad spend. The ROAS calculator also checks it against your margin.
Should I use a ROAS goal bid strategy? It can help once the account has steady conversion data. On a new or low-volume account it often limits delivery too much.
The one-line version
ROAS is CTR, conversion rate, order value and CPM multiplied together. Move each one a little and the total moves a lot.
